TCFD

The Oji Group announced its support for the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) in December 2020, and is working on climate-related information disclosure recommended by the TCFD.

TCDF
  • The TCFD is a task force established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) at the request of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. In June 2017, the TCFD released its recommendations that encourage companies to disclose the financial implications of climate-related risks and opportunities to help investors make appropriate investment decisions.

Japan Climate Initiative

Japan Climate Initiative

In December 2022, Oji Holdings joined the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI)*1, which was established to strengthen the dissemination of information and exchange of opinions among companies, local governments, NGOs, and others actively working to address climate change.
In April 2023, we endorsed a message through the JCI calling on the Japanese government to reduce dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and overcome the two crises, the climate crisis and the energy crisis, by accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and introducing effective carbon pricing as soon as possible, which we presented through the JCI.

<JCI message>
Overcoming Two Crises with Renewable Energy and Carbon Pricing
As a member of various non-state actors such as corporations, local governments, and NGOs, we will continue our efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions*2 by 2050, toward realizing a decarbonized society as required by the Paris Agreement.

Compliance with and support for laws, regulations, and policies

The Company supports laws and regulations (such as the Law Concerning the Promotion of Measures to Cope with Global Warming (Global Warming Countermeasures Law) and the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy (Energy Conservation Law) in Japan) and policies relating to climate change and energy consumption reduction at its domestic and overseas sites and appropriately responds to these.
In addition, specified business operators under the Energy Conservation Law of our Group companies are obliged to reduce their energy intensity by an average of 1% per year. Each year, each workplace sets its energy intensity reduction targets and works to achieve them.

GX League

Oji Holdings joined the GX League which began full-scale activities in May 2023. The League is a forum for companies endeavoring for carbon neutrality to discuss and carry out a transformation of the entire socioeconomic systems (green transformation) in cooperation with the Japanese Government, universities, and financial institutions.

Japan Paper Association (JPA)

We are a member of the Japan Paper Association. The Nippon Paper Association participates in the Nippon Keidanren's Carbon Neutral Action Plan (formerly the Low Carbon Society Action Plan). In support of the aims of the Carbon Neutral Action Plan, we are participating in the Carbon Neutral Action Plan (Phase II)* with a target year of 2030.
We also participate as members of the Energy/Technical Committee, which the Japan Paper Association set up to formulate the Carbon Neutral Action Plan and progress report. We also participate in the Environmental Conservation Committee, which the Japan Paper Association sets up. Through these activities, we indirectly lobby the government by reflecting our views on the industry association's policy proposals on climate change issues, such as formulating CO2 emission reduction targets.
To ensure that our climate change strategy is consistent with the position of industry associations, we participate in seminars organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and other government departments on climate change, as well as seminars organized by industry associations, to gather information, and participate as a member of various related organizations to discuss climate change issues and share their content internally. The content of these discussions is shared within the Company. Furthermore, we check whether the content of these discussions is in line with our policies and coordinate them through the Sustainability Promotion Committee, which is chaired by the President and Group CEO. Through this process, we align our climate change strategy with our activities with industry associations.

  • *The targets established by the Carbon Neutral Action Plan are as followsPhase II: "Reduce energy-derived CO2 emissions from domestic production facilities by 38% in FY2030 compared to FY13."

Sustainable Forest Management

Joining the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity

We have joined the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity, which was voluntarily launched by companies, local governments and organizations under the initiative of the Ministry of the Environment. This Alliance aims to “protect at least 30% of land and sea by 2030,” which was launched at the G7 Summit in June 2021. The Alliance supports the registration of lands owned/managed by its members in the global OECM* database and the expansion of protected areas.

  • *Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures: Areas where biodiversity is being conserved through efforts by the private sector, such as corporate forests and satoyama.

Joining the Clean Ocean Materials Alliance (CLOMA)

The Oji Group is participating as a founding member in the Clean Ocean Materials Alliance (CLOMA), a platform for promoting measures to address the issue of plastic in the ocean by industry as a whole, and undertaking joint measures with other industries to reduce waste.

Collaboration with external organizations on water

In 2012, the Oji Group began participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an NGO with a huge database of environmental information on countermeasures against climate change, water, and forests. We respond to the CDP Water questionnaire, which assesses water resource management by the Oji Group.

We also support the intent of the Japan Water Forum (JWF), an NPO that collaborates with diverse related parties including not only those in Japan but also United Nations organizations, international organizations, development banks, national and municipal governments, private companies, researchers, and NGOs of other countries. We have been a member of the JWF since its establishment in 2004 and we continue to work on activities involving water policy.
